Try a Mac and you'll never go back to Windows computers. We have a mac notebook that's over ten years old. It has NEVER crashed and is still as useful as the day we bought it. Worth every penny.

build your own or have someone build it for you that knows what they're doing. The boxes sold off the retail shelf are garbage. Laptops: I currently have a Sony Vaio and am very pleased with it

When buying a computer the first thing to consider is "What do you want it to do?" Then you survey all the ones that will do that.

My Compaq Presario 2500 series laptop has been good; I also like Toshiba machines - good quality and reasonably priced.
