What is the best software to build a personal website?

I can visualize what I'd like to set up. Something along the lines of a building to enter with rooms containing different content: e.g. music room, home theater, library, etc. I just haven't had the time to find out what software would be the best to get me there.

There is a trade-off which you need to be aware of.
Imagine you are building a car, there are two basic ways:

1. You can start with some metal, and build it all yourself - it takes longer, is harder work, but you get exactly what you want. That's Notepad. Dreamweaver helps out a lot, but it's still raw metal.

2. You buy an engine already complete. You buy a kit for the bodywork. Building the car from these pre-built components is a lot faster, and easier, but you don't have complete freedom to get exactly what you want. This is the Wordpress, Joomla, (and I'm guessing) XsitePro approach.

I personally always found my creativity was stifled at some stage with option 2. If you go that route, don't look at the features of the products, look at their demo websites to see if someone has created something like what you want. And join the forums, to ask if what you want is possible.

It's easy to buy something that creates a beautiful website very quickly - it's just missing those 2 or 3 features you really want.

If you choose option 1 - then getting up and running will take longer - possibly a lot longer depending on the complexity of your ideas, and what you know already. The saving grace is anything you have seen on the web - you can do. And maybe, even do something entirely new.....

I've heard good reviews for "dreamweaver" - I believe that's right.

My fave is XSitepro. There isn't anything you can't do with it. It's pricey, though. I think maybe $300.00. But there are always deals out there. I bought it because every other website design software that I tried was lacking in features one way or another. With XsitePro you can design your own headers, as well as create Flash files. It does too much too list here!

The owner's name is Paul, and they are based in England. I can honestly tell you that they have excellent support and answers emails quickly. Check them out by Googling XsitePro.

Notepad...

The one product of Microsoft that never fails and does exactly what you can expect it to do, like creating websites.

I use Dreamweaver when I have to do something from the ground up. I have the whole Adobe CS4 Suite though. But Dreamweaver starts at $400, and is a little pricey.

There is a freeware program called Coffee Cup HTML Editor that's not bad. I use it for simple stuff and mock ups.

I'm going to give a free download of BlueVoda a try ... but my speakers still aren't working, so I have to lip-read the tutorials, or I'll have to figure it out on my own ... I love a challenge ;)
