I think that first you have to narrow down what kind of business you would like to open.
By then, you should have decided what kind of business you would be good at, and what skills and ability you have to operate that kind of business.
If you have enough practical ecperience to own and run a business, and know what your business will be, then you want to think of what kinds of customers will want to use your business, and start to think of how you will attract them to use your business.
Get to know what competition you will face from other businesses who are attracting the same customers that you need to have, and start thinking of an 'edge' or 'advantage' that you might have and can use to attract customerrs away from your competition.
If you find any of that outside of your field of knowledge or expertise, first, take a course in how to open a small business, and maybe begin to look for a partner(s) who will fill in the knowledge or experience gaps that you are lacking.
Carefully determine who your customers will be and what the munique service or product(s) you will offer to attract them.
Build your business plan. What will you need to spend, and why, to get your business up and runnung. Work ou what your break-even sales point will be, and determine how long it will take to reach that point, and then how long it will take for you to reach healthy profitabbility.
Now, determine how much money you have to invest, and how much money you will need to keep the business going until you begin to make a healthy profit margin. At this point, you will recognise whether or not you're going to need outside financing, and if that's the case, you will have to find out who will lend you the financing, and how much the borrowing cost will be. That will change your projection time frame for reaching healthy profitability.
While you are doing all of that, you should also be serchin locations for you business. Keep in mind whether or not your business is of a type that it is important for customers to easily and conveniently get to your door, or if that will not be a factor. Matbe for you, easy access to transportation routes will be more important. Remember that location is everything!
That's just a brief and very geberal overview in answer to your question, but I hope it is helpful.

If the question is, what is the best way to own your own business, it comes down to research, knowing the ins and outs of business and all it involves, and being business savry.

If the question is, what is the best way to mind your own business, well, simply let other people live their own lives and concentrate on your own life.
