Protective - you want what is best for that person
Possessive - you want what is best for you

Protective: to defend or guard from attack, invasion, loss, annoyance, insult, etc.; cover or shield from injury or danger.

Possessive: jealously opposed to the personal independence of, or to any influence other than one's own upon, a child, spouse, etc.

"Protective" allows you to be yourself safely. "Possessive" is more concerned with you being his (or hers).

Subjective opinion of both. Honestly, it depends on both parties, as one might want more freedom, and the other might be too paranoid for that, or the possessed might think fondly of being possessed, and the possessor might hold a favorably tight grip on them. All depends on the people involved.

I think protective keeps within boundaries, for example my ex-husband was protective of me when I started a job working with real jerks and asked me questions like "What if x, y, or z happens, will you quit? It doesn't sound like a good situation there." Possessive would be if he FORBADE me to continue the job, or maybe even called them up to tell them not to treat "his wife" like that.

Possessive says you can't go out, protective says you can go anywhere you want because no one would dare hurt you.
