精神病 "seishinbyou"

(That's pronounced "say-sheen-byo", with "byo" run together like you put the letter "b" in front of "yo-yo".)

Japan has more folks in psychiatric hospitals, per capita, than any other country; it was WAY more suicides than any other country. The disease with the most psychosis associated with it is schizophrenia, a pretty horrible English word derived from the Greek words for "split mind," yet schizophrenia is NOT a split-personality-type condition at all; it is the condition with the most psychosis.

Anyway, in 2002, Japan changed the word it uses for schizophrenia in an attempt to make it less negatively perceived than the old Japanese word. The new Japanese term for schizophrenia with its intense psychosis, is Togo-Shicchou-Sho, which translates as "loss-of-integration disorder." The old word was "Seishin-Bunretsu-Byo," which translated to "a disease which fragments the soul."
