Well, beside the spiritual meaning it is a shepherds saying. Fast moving water scares sheep and they will not drink from it. The whole psalm is portraying God as a shepherd.

it's all too rare that people appreciate the pragmatic origins of spiritual metaphor! yay!

Psalm 23

A Psalm of David

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

In my life this is alive as I live in a rough neighborhood but venture out even at my age among drug dealers, robbers, and prostitutes without harm at all hours - even 4AM. My table is full...while others beg for scraps [kin you gimmee fiddy cent?] I pull bottles and cans from the garbage right in front of them and cash them in at the liquor store, getting back the money they pay for booze at the same store. I live in what was a 2 family home by myself while in a short distance I know of many houses where the people jam in like cockroaches sometimes 20 people per house. There is nothing I want I don't have, most of all peace and freeedom.
But then again they don't recite Guru Geetaa Likeeta (gurugita.vpweb.com) seen as my avatar today in which it is promised that God in the form of the guru will protect me. I also have been blessed with not having to report for work for 20 years.
HA!

It means that if you trust god to provide you with all that you want, you will find your life filling with wonderful things.

This being said, if you want violence, then you will find violence. But if you want peace with prosperity, and you know that you can have it simply by recognizing that your actions are the manifestation of your prayers in action, then you can start to choose actions that produce what you REALLY want - freedom from fear that comes only with recognition of your own innate and unlimited power.

As life creates its own energy all around you - God is there to be your wealth (not just monetary wealth) as you lie down in green pastures. Green Pasture's are those things which allow you to be well and healthy with (Still Waters) inner peace.

He leads me beside still waters. Meaning He is calming and calms waters. Instead of leading him by a dashing wild river, he is a calming source.

I find comfort in this Psalm...just knowing God is in control of the storms of life and in them we can find peace and calm....it's a trust thing....just as the sheep trust the Shepard, we trust the Lord to help us in times of need and protects us through the storm....and it will seem like still waters....being that water is probably the strongest force on earth, that says alot...
