I guess that anything beyond that has to be mutual as well. The next thing would be chatting and seeing each other face to face...even if it's online as well. Then exchanging phone numbers. Email addresses. Maybe talking about the possibility of getting together sometime, if the distance isn't too great.
This goes at different speeds for different people...and of course, each person has to be ready for each step.
I'm sure there are people that you can trust who are online. Just like in real life. But, just like in the real world, there isn't a really good test to know who those are. It's always a risk of sorts.

It's just like anything else in life. Everything is risk, and you never know until you try. You have to feel strongly enough about anything to want to take a chance. My experience with online dating has been mixed, but generally aside from the crazies and manic depressives, most people online are just like you. They're regular people looking for more or less the same things as everyone else. After you've talked online, and on the phone, and maybe Skyped or webcammed, the next logical step is to meet in person and see what kind of chemistry you have together. It might be a good thing, it might be a bad thing but you'll never know unless you give it a shot. Good luck!
