Elaborate. The term "church" has many meanings nowadays..
Biblicly it was "ecclesia" (Greek) , meaning "called out". Due to bad translating over the years, the word has come to mean different things.
Technically, the "church" is the people (or congregation). The church is the "bride of Christ" (He's not "marrying" a building).

Its just a place to congregate and worship afaik, although, being benevolent they will often be used for all sorts of things to benefit the local community...

In many cases I believe the prime function of a church is to congregate people who have similar beliefs, discuss them and their applicable meanings, and introduce those beliefs to children who are at an age where they are unable to decide for themselves what they wish to believe in.

Then.... it is the place people of like-faith can gather. Some congregations are blindly self-righteous and exclusionary. You can believe what you believe but you don't have to be condemning to people who don't share your faith. Those sort of church groups are destructive.
