The way I see it, we want to live in a society where we don't get murdered ourselves (or robbed, or raped, or whatever) so we've struck a collective deal: in return for protection from getting murdered, we agree not to murder anyone else. That's why (for example) killing animals isn't considered murder: preventing it doesn't help us at all.<br />

Basically, we've drawn up a list of stuff we don't want to have happen to us, and called it illegal.
