I think it all comes down to collectivism or individualism. Government is collective, so if a person wants more of that, then that's to the left on the political spectrum. If someone could care less about their fellow citizens, in the sense that they condone people starving to death without government assistance, that's to the right.
Left-wing would be the most collective ideology or system of government, like communism. I think communism is the at the very end to the left. But when you go far to the right, it gets confusing because ultra-conservatives (in America) want less and less government, which is kind of anarchist--in other word, everyone fending for themselves, or with little private support.
But I guess the main difference between right-wing and anarchists is that the latter are not nationalists, don't support militarism, etc. Right-wingers, at least in America, are all about blowing up the world in America's name and wrapping themselves in the flag, not to mention policing our borders themselves.

The answers below say it all... you won't find a "true" definition because it all depends on your viewpoint. The most extreme ends of the political spectrum will use the most extreme means to impose their viewpoint on others - which is why both the Nazis and the Communists used state mechanisms (most notably the police) to subdue dissent, and why they both killed millions of their own citizens.

In less extreme versions (so called "functioning" democracies), parties come closer to the centre, sometimes so close that they can almost appear to switch places (you could almost say that this happened in reality with the Democrats and Republicans in the US, if you look into the history of both parties).

One other notable phenomenon is that the closer two parties are in broad outlook and agenda, the more loudly they will argue with each other about tiny differences in the method of achieving these goals.

From a UK perspective, US voters appear to be faced with a choice between "quite a long way right of centre" and "a little bit further right of centre but don't you dare call us extremists or we'll lock you up for being a whiny, pansy-***, pinko liberal"

Having said that, since the modernisation of the UK Labour Party, we are currently faced with exactly the same choice.

Okay... say you are inside a plane.

Now you are facing the tail end of the plain, walking to go to the bathroom.

Now if you look to your left, the right wing will be that side. And then if you look to the right, the left wing will be that side.

Got that? Look left.. see right. Look right, see left.
