What is the value of having citizen advisory groups involved at the school and/or district level?

So the "professionals" can learn more about the needs of the community and tailor services accordingly. These groups also serve to let professionals know what they are doing right, and what the community wants more of.

Consumer panels and citizen advisory boards are wonderful learning tools for entities (schools, hospitals, human services). They help identify areas of need that may be addressed by the school.

Nothing like talking to someone who is on the receiving end of a service to illuminate errors or to enlighten teachers, service or care givers of their successes.

At the school level we implement citizen advisory groups to help us work out decisions based on the lives of the people it will make an impact on......YOU! It is your money and your lives that will have be affected. So asking for input is a great tool and a perspective that can't come from an architect, accountant or administrator quite the same way.

No....I do not think so....The ones that I have ran up agenst were the type of people that always thought that their way of thinking was the best...And would never even think that there could be a different way.....

Best to leave the education up to the educators

The schools belong to the citizens. A citizen who never does anything at a school is not meeting his/her obligation. Whether we have children there or not we should all become involved with OUR schools. All to often we let the government have total control. They can screw anything up. My advice to anyone reading this is to become involved with YOUR school. Your school is teaching the people who will take care of you in your old age.

I know at the college level anyhow, the advisory group was largely made up of the people in the career field for the program. It was great because they gave insight to the current trends and needs of the field so we could make sure the program included information that would benefit the student and in turn the field.
