I think it depends on what you are talking about here.
Some things....like robbing a bank or doing some of the crazy "FAIL" stunts you can see on utube....should never be tried. It's not cowardice; it's wisdom and not putting God to a foolish test!

With some things, it's actually best to not get back up. At least not for a while. To rest from the struggle can be important if you have been hurt in some way. I mean, you can kill yourself through the exhaustion of jousting with windmills. Sometimes you 've got to stay down for a while. Let the bad guy walk away. Take time to regroup or find an alternative plan for finding your feet. However, you must get up eventually. Or you will simply sink down further. Or go into dust.

Getting knocked down is inevitable anytime you stand up for anything. It can be horrible, especially if the loss is great, or it is the death of a dream. But getting knocked down can build character. Having any part in life at all means getting knocked down.

    So which is the worst?
Getting knocked down wouldn't be the worst- unless it actually destroys you in the blow.
Never trying in the first place could mean a wise choice or a cowardly one, depending on the circumstance.
I honestly think not getting back up is the worst. You will be knocked down at some point. Living at all means trying, to an extent. But it's the staying down that defeats you ultimately. It's that point where you are too weak or have no more resources or you despair. It is eventual death.

Never trying in ther first place. You will never know what is going to happen unless you try first. I always regreted my action. Giving up before trying I mean, and I always wondered what would happen if I did take the chance. Guess I'll never know...
