If the poor, helpless people of the previous regine were treated SO badly during apartheid, why is then that since they took over the country in 1994, there are now more unemployement, all forms of crime has increased, more than 80% of the parlement have a criminal record, local goverment is falling apart, corruption is all over, and the country is listed as one of the 5 most dangerous countries in the world...

Well, I grew up in the apartheid era, and everybody respected each other. Did not matter back or white. Today, more than 15 years after the country was taken over by the so-called previously disadvantaged people, blacks comes out of university, but still can not read or write. Why is it that South Africa has adopted an education system that was rejected by most other African countries because it did not work.

That is the reason that our beloved country's health minister displayed garlic and beetroot as a cure for aids, our current president still believe that aids gets cured by taking a shower. Our head of police closes down the anti-corruption branch to cover up his involvment in illegal deals, the police stations are using private security companies to gaurd the police stations.

Some of my experiences:

1 - Burglar entered my yard, was chased over to wall to my neigbour, whose dog bit the burglar. Me and my neigbour was suides for medical expecise

2 - 1st Car hijack, I realised what was happening, and tried to get away. Hijacker reported me, and I was fined for reckless driving.

3 - 2nd Car hijack, I was better prepared, caught the hijacker off-gaurd, pushed him face down in his car, took his keys, and drove to the nearest police station. Nobody could understand english, and as I tried to leave, they wanted to arrest me for stealing the hijacker's car keys.

4 - Hit a dear in the road, only the front light broken, and the dear ran away. Got arrested for not reporting a vehicle accident in time.

5 - Was robbed from my mobile phone by 3 men with knives. Police actually took photos of the whole crime. Same 3 robbed a store the same day, by cutting a man's throut. Case was thrown out because the camera was not signed out on an official register. Afterwards, I was suided for damaging a informal pavement dealer's table when I tried to get away from the scene.

6 - My son was hijacked from his bicycle at gun point, the thiefs were in front of the house for more than an hour, shouting how they will kill him, and rape his mother. The police could not attend, because they only had 1 vehicle for the town, and it did not have petrol due to lack of funds.

7 - A burglar entered through our roof, I shot him twice (not dead). I am still waiting for the police. My armed responce company was on the scene within 2 minutes. As the police did not show up after several hours, they had to let the burglar go, as their was another robbery.

8 - Reported a murder in front of my house, but the police never showed up. Only after the murdered victim was run over by a truck (killed again), did an ambulance arrive. Within a couple of minutes, a group of about 50 gathered, starting to fight, and we had to flee our home.

9 - Doing maintenance on an electrical substation in town, I handed in a report to the municipality stating that the batteries used for the electrical protection are faulty. 3 years later, two major substations burned to the ground after cable theft, and the protection failed to clear the fault. this resulting in loss of power for 3-5 days, and hot water for almost two weeks.

10 - Most middle class houses now have back-up generators installed to cope with load shedding (only getting power when available).

11 - The electricity giant and a coal mine are so corrupted that the electricity giant buys it's coal for more than it double the import price for a lower grade coal, but then sells it's electricity to the coal mine for at least 50% less than it actually cost them to generate the electricity.

12 - You get jailed for not paying your TV licence, but murderes are released from jail due to overcrouding.

13 - My son had a seisure, and the ambulance arrived to give him 1st line medical treatment. However, they could not take him to hospital, as our town's hospital was closed. I had to drive my son to another town.

14 - You get turned down by the reception at the hospital, as they say the standards dropped so low, it will be better to take your child to the docter the next day.

15 - My wife was turned away three times by two differnt emergency rooms, as she only had a cold. It turned out that she had hypetitis A, and her liver was damaged.

16 - South africa is the only place where you can become an engineer with a scheme vehicle, the day after you have completed your studies. No experience required. Senoir Electrical Engineers at the age of 23. Wow.

17 - With 11 official languages, there is nobody that can assist you in any goverment related enviroment.

18 - Security - I live in a prison. 6 feet walls around my house, security gates in front of all doors, burglar bars in front of all windows. At least 5 lever locks on all doors, infrared beams around the house. Remote alarm monitoring, armed response services. Gear lever and stearing wheel locks on all locked vehicles with vehicle immobiliser, tracking system and alarm, while locked up in a garage with door censors and passive infrared eyes. Several alarm panic buttons throughout the house, security gates inside the house to keep them out of the bedrooms. All windows closed at night to prevent the burglars from spraying poison through your windows. Smach & grab protection on all vehicle windows, anti hijacking systems in the cars, etched car windows, micro-dot, U/V markings. This is normal for us, but might sound ridiculous to you...

19 - Organised gangs robbing overseas visitors from the airport, with the assistance of the police.

20 - It's the only country I know of where the police service reccommend drivers NOT to stop when pulled over by police or the traffic department.

21 - We have stopped going into town, as most of the stores were closed down due to hawkers selling their items on the pavements. No rent, no tax, even stealing their electricity from the shops. Parking was impossible due to the hawkers taking that over as well.

22 - FIFA 2010, well, let us hope that they will complete the stadiums, as they are all on strike... Again.

23 - Counted the bicycles at my youngest's school. Only 7. What were these parents thinking sending their kids off to school on a bicycle.

24 - Applying for a legal firearm license can take up to 1 year, and almost R1000. Bying an illegal, unlicensed AK47 with 500 rounds will set you back R200.

25 - Be my guest. Visit South Africa, and see for yourself. Then, before feeling sorry for the poor, previously disadantaged, look up the history, and see that we have bought parts of the country from the blacks many moons ago, the same land they now claim were there forefather's. Grow up, that was more than 300 years ago. Think of Rodesia, which is now Zimbabwe. Then think of South Africa. We are almost a 2nd Zimbabwe. But, hell, Mugabe is black, so it's fine with the rest of the world. It's fine if the world hears about the thousands of farmers murdered each year, they were murderd by poor blacks. It's fine if our president sings "bring my machine gun", he's black. Why is it then that most of the blacks are now complainig that they are worse off now, than during the apartheid era?

Hell, the world wanted South Africa to be like this. Now that the country is in this state, you are still mouning.

Just my opinion.

When I was over there about 10 years ago, it was a bit of an eye opener for me. You had to limit where you went, how you went there, who you were with etc out of fear. You could not stop just anywhere, even in the car. You were afraid of getting hurt. And some people I know there have been hurt. For an Aussie it was a bit weird, and scary.

But I have heard it's become a lot better since then.

well these are my first impressions (prejudices, as i was never there): racism, political instability, common crime, beautiful landscapes, wild animals, tourism. i have a friend living there and she told me loads about the country but i got the feeling she lives in a pink bubble - very privileged, rich and not bothered with general problems. on the other hand parents of her husband have been killed in a breaking and entering incident years back…

South Africa was invaded and over run and the true natives should regain control of their country by any means necessary!!!! It's a shame that an entire people were treated like animals in a land that belonged to them. Much like what happened to the Natives, the Original People, in the US.

It was once a great, modern society and a model for the rest of the continent to aspire to.

The current leaders have totally destroyed the country and have proven to be incompetent and corrupt.

The entire continent has so much potential but will never be anything but poor due to the petty tribal fighting and corruption.

Its a country now run by wild animals- crime abounds and god-forbid if you are white (or black, but there is targeting of whites) . Rape has been the new national sport for awhile, esp of children (they think it'll cure AIDS) and machete murder is a pastime. Get out by any means necessary.
