hard to say. no telling how evolution has occurred in their neighborhood. in fact we may be able to communicate or receive messages on a vast scale but only use the senses we deem as most concrete.we only know life from our biological series of adaptations. maybe they only evolve in what would be extremely harsh conditions for us or perhaps they are inter dimensional and we are not so perhaps if they did communicate with us it can only be on our terms unless they were like us in some sense. their perceptions would have to be similar to ours, or maybe not. maybe they see us all the time and try to talk but we do not detect them so they see us as mindless automatons who ignore them. perhaps like an interstellar pistol shrimp they could only communicate by blowing us to smithereens. perhaps they have methods of communication as of yet unavailable to us at the current level of technology and biology. perhaps they have evolved into an interstellar biological entity and have no need of technology. perhaps some form of bio would only have the capacity to communicate with our machines and not us. how funny. math is theoretically the universal language perhaps a nice equation or series of might be used. perhaps they do not calculate and only use what would seem to us to be wildy abstract and ever changing symbols or carve on meteorites with pokes and scratches. maybe cause temperature pockets in a kind of thermal morse code or maybe they have a way to pass currents along baryon particles causing odd blips resembling our own attempts to observe a phenomenon and interpretting it as a course of quantum mechanics that make no sense and appear wildly random. lol this is fun. no telling i guess.

Lasers can carry information long distances with little signal degradation.
