It should be personal
thats a very personal thing, depends what you like. but music that is gentle and flowing like the waltz or light swing and jazz go well at a dinner. or soft cabaret, 20's sound is nice. but if you like rock or punk or trance or rap or say the new romantics sound of the early 80's there all different. elevator music or toe-tapping music is nicer than heavy rock, but popular music is ok if soft in public & work places...it should be lower than what some shops play it at. its nice to hear silence too. while I do like some Oprah and classical - I know very little about it compared to a musician. but I just know what I like, a bit like art for me...I;m no expert on these things.
it stands the test of time. It was a great song in the present and 20 yrs from now, you'll hear it again and still love it
the listeners ear!
The listener connecting with the music in their own way.
Be it reflecting their love (soppy stuff)
Their Hate (some metal /shrug)
Their sense of social identity ( good rap )
Or just a pleasant sound (pop)
Any route to a persons inner most feelings.
Unfortunately most people pick one route and hate all others... See the 'anything that isnt rap music' answer lol
any voice that sings with passion and soul.... any instrument that is played with passion and soul..the saxophone and guitar are my favourites.
an undertone of sadness - especially when the music is upbeat but you can just feel the current of anguish dripping from the instruments
ex: audioslave - like a stone
Melody and rhythm are always nice.
A complete lack of rap of any form.
Anything from the heart and the pit of ones soul.
Basically you can't hear that kind of "music" on the radio. You need to seek it out for yourself.
It's almost impossible to define - what qualities make good art? Or good poetry? Or good literature?
It comes down to a matter of personality. Or rather mentality - we like things that we can associate with.
Take me for instance - I enjoy guitar based music because I play the guitar, so I can appreciate the music from a technical point of view. In addition to that I like alternative/punk rock bands best of all (like bl<x>ink 182), as their music is often either very euphoric or very desolate - like my moods.
