i would talk to her.. tell her that these things are hurting you, and ask her why she is doing this.

i will continue treating this person the same way as i always do.
why should i come down to his/her level? i have my standards to maintain. and plus when you dont do as others expect from you, they feel bad themselves and hence their conscience kicks them to say 'sorry!'

I know you have said she is old however since when is being old an excuse for bad behavior? I would do what twix said confront her I would be inclined though not to mention names like who told you what just say you have been told and is this true? Bet she will never do it again as in talk unkindly behind your back.

Obviously if the person is your relative you cannot stop talking to them. Also, I would not stoop to their level and say things about them or treat them badly. However you could talk to them about the issue and try to see why they are saying such things.

Elderly relatives are tricky. You can hardly just cut them off. Maybe try explaining to her that you don't appreciate her slagging you off to everyone and you'd rather she didn't do it.

Try to tell her privately; state clearly and calmly how her conduct makes you feel. Do not cry or whine. Make this short. She will be defensive and try to rationalize her behavior. Just respond politely, tell again how specific remarks made you feel, and ask for how you'd prefer to talk to/about you. Make this short. Initially, she will not. The next time you catch her at it, or someone tells you about it, gently tell her again how the words make you feel. When she says it, tell her at the time she does it (again, as calmly as you can), or mildly confront her about it when you hear put-downs second hand. The behavior will diminish, it will never disappear. You will feel better about it eventually.

I had the same problem with my Aunt.. I confronted my Aunt about it and she had some decentcy to tell me the truth. It was a sad time hearing from her that she was saying all those mean things about me, but we got on an amazing level that day. She told me why she said what she said and she told me what I could do to help myself. We are on an okay level today and we still talk to each other. We are actually growing together as family members should. So my advise to you would be to confront her. Ask her if she sais those things, and if she says no tell her that you know she did.. Tell her you have amny birdies tell you it was her, but don't mention their names because you don't want other family/friend trouble. Ask her why she said those things. Ask her if she had any advise for you so maybe those things aren't said again by her or someone else. Make sure your calm about everything. Don't barrier her in a corner or anything. Make sure your polite and say thanks and please and everything..
Good luck!

I will just ignore her and i would never care about her, even though she's older and my relative .. I don't care what she says, I know who I am.. or I'll tell her the truth that I don't want her to say bad things about me with other people or else I would do the same thing to her (in my case) my aunt used to say bad things about me too.. I just did the same thing she did to me.. and guess what everybody believed in me and nobody believed her.. she used to say bad things about me, my mom and other family members.. now she learned her lesson.. (don't think that I don't respect or love her , we are good now and she loves me haha)
