What should I know and expect in Navy basic training?

Ok. Here I go...I am 21 years old female from Alabama. Since I'm currently enlisted on an open contract with the Navy, and I have no idea when I'm leaving for basic training. I'm also in the Delayed Entry Program, and I think my recruiter is a complete doucher. (I don't like talking to him at ALL! He's rude...but I think it's because I'm his first recruit and female. LOL! I must make him nervous.) Anywhoo...If any have any advice on what I should expect and know, it's greatly appreciated. My recruiter says I'm in great shape since I ran track in HS. So, I'm not too worried about the physical part. I also have a 15 month old daughter. How should I deal with the emotional separation? All advice is welcome:)

Dear msmallory06

Congratulations on your enlistment and willingness to serve your nation.

Because you are in good physical condition, the physical conditioning aspects of your basic training should not be a problem for you.

The purpose of basic training is to give you basic knowledge and understanding of what is required of you as a sailor and to teach you discipline and obedience.

Your training petty officers will do things that you will probably find demeaning and unfair. Just do exactly as you are told, instantly when told, and don't take anything personally because it is not personal and is designed to teach you how to follow orders, work as a team, and exercise self discipline.

Navy life as a junior enlisted can be a pain in the but until you get the hang of what is expected. Once you understand and comply, you will find Navy life fun and rewarding.

Life in the military can be a very dangerous. You are working under difficult conditions, around dangerous machinery, chemicals, fuels, explosives, weapons, etc. That is why absolute instant obedience needs to become second nature to you and why the training is designed as it is -- to make sure that when you enter the fleet, you will survive and thrive.

Do as you are told, pay close attention to the lessons you are taugh, both thse spoken and unspoken, and you will have a great life in the Navy. Best of luck to you.

It is easier than Army Basic Training

Be ready for fitness training, upper body strength for (push- ups)

Keep a low profile

Do not get discouraged....you will say..."What was I thinking"

You will be fine

You can request a new recruiter be assigned to you but know that if you are having problems dealing with people like him you might not want to enlist because there are more and even worse. Navy basic training is easy because it's mostly academic although there is physical requirements also. Those are standard for all the branches of the service. Just follow orders and pay attention to detail and don't become the focus of the CC's attention.

Sorry, stay at home and look after your youngster, these are precious years for you both, at least leave it another few years, and if you still feel the need to join then go for it. Is it really worth it now???

Congratulations It's good to see a normal healthy woman with a normal healthy spine when there are so many women who seem to want to hide behind men.
