What term or phrase did you say when you were that may likely be decried as "offensive" now?

My mother is "native american". She has never described herself that way, her parents never described themselves that way. They always refer to themselves as Indians. I was telling a story to one of my employees and referred to my mom as an indian and this woman took great exception to it. She said that she is part "native american" and that she finds the term "indian" offensive. My mom would laugh if I called her that, she calls herself an indian. These days, we have to be so careful what we say because someone will surely be offended.
