What was the general route for immigrants to Ellis Island?

I'm trying to do family research. I found someone who might be my great great grandfather. But I know they used to live in Austria. The manifest says that was their residence but they came from "Nassau via Antilles" which is the Bahamas/Cuba area. Like they got on the ship over in Europe, but made a stop in the Bahamas before continuing onto New York. Any ideas and all suggestions are welcome.

Most of the East Coast/ Atlantic immigrants came in thru New York which was the major shipping port during the early 19th and late 18th centuries. San Francisco was the primary port from the Pacific. That does not rule out them comming in thru other port cites. It can depend on when they came over but two possible spots are Miami or New Orleans.

Google "immigrant route to Ellis Island"....There is a virtual tour by earthlink....it's interesting and informative. It has a map, outlining their route.

i seriously think that someone should make up an incorrect answer so that you get it wrong on your homework or quiz or whatever.
