1st absorb any wetness due to feces or urine. Use several la<x>yers of paper towels. Mix a solution of white vinegar and water 1/2 and 1/2. Soak the carpet with this solution. Scrub if necessary. Blot the area using several paper towels again. When the area is almost dry sprinkly some baking soda over the area. Then mix 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide with a tsp of dish deteregent. Use rubber gloves! Slowly pour the peroxide solution over the baking soda. Work the disolving baking soda into the carpet. Dry completely and then vacuum. This has always worked for us and leaves the house smelling pretty fresh. If you just clean it with vinegar, then your house smells like vinegar and the cat or dog may remark that territory. Thats what you have to watch out for. Once they make a mistake on an area they will often go back and make that mistake again in that area! This method erases the amonia in the urine or feces.
