5 Wait for him to stop yelling, then say, 'Wow, can you say that a little softer this time, I didn't quite get that'

I completely phase out when people shout at me.

SIf my dad got up in my face now....I'd freak the hell out, since he died in 1992.

Step back and calmly ask him what is so bad that he feels the need to scream?

Always remember that is your parent, and respect is to be given. If the reason was for something you did and it was wrong, its because they are afraid for you. No matter what age you are they always will be afraid for you, and that is how they tend to react at times. Just try and understand they raised you and cared for you and protected you. They want nothing but the best for you. So the thought of you making a mistake scares them. No matter how minimal.
Sometimes the parent made the mistake and they try and justify it by yelling at you ( because you are aware), (still respect) they are most likely embarrassed or ashamed.

If it was a just out the blue thing that they over reacted about something so simple. It could be they had a bad day and the son/daughter did something so minor, the parent took advantage and yelled to release some anger. It sounds selfish but no one else would really tolerate that unless they really loved and knew them.

When everyone calms down, you should tell the parent you understand they were angry. And you should also tell them how you felt when you were being yelled at. Let them know it hurts and you feel belittled. Explain you too are now an adult (even though not as experienced) but you can be talked to calmly when these things happen.
