What would you do if your son put his middle finger up to the police?

My son did that on friday and got a good telling off for it in the street. He is nearly six and seems very impressed with a boy who has had little in the way of parenting, he is teaching him no end of bad behavior.

I would hope he was to young to understand so as not to correct me while I'm fibbing to the police, telling them he had trapped his finger in a door and had been showing everyone all day, apologise and make our exit as quick as possible

lol, you think a lot like me but I knew he understood, he was doing it in the house a day or so before so he didn't have any excuses.

I think it would depend on the circumstances. Did the police see? Was it in reaction to something the police did? Was he just copying someone else?
I've read the other responses, but I still don't think it's enough information.

If it is what it looks like, that he gave them an f-u and knew it meant that (or that it meant something really bad) without provocation and without them knowing, I would just talk to him, explain why it's not cool to do that to anyone (police or not) and leave it at that - unless he did it again.

It reminds me a bit of a Susan Sarandon quote I saw years back (it doesn't quite apply but does remind me): "I taught my children to question authority. I just didn't realize that the first authority they'd question would be mine".

My son has this real baulshy attitude we are working hard to break, he loves to play the tough guy. He definitely knew what he was doing.

Well it seems doubly bad because it was at the police but yes you are right, I would be upset whoever he did it to. I can't see how I can stop him associating at all with this boy though, they are in school together. I think if I make too big an issue about him, he will become an even bigger attraction also my son has a huge mouth and could cause an embarrassing incident in front of the other kids mother, she isn't the sort who you want to cause trouble with you know?

Cheer him on. Freedom of speech for the win. I do the same myself. They've been nothing but trouble, as the government is the same. Pigs, all of them.
