I did the best I could. Don't worry about looking silly. Be true to yourself. Don't take the path of least resistance. Be daring. Don't follow all the rules. Never make fun of anyone. Take up for those who can't defend themselves. Never do anything that will make you feel bad about yourself.

My Dad gave me advice when I was a kid that I didn't really understand until recently. I thought that he was an a-hole at the time (teenage years) b/c I did not "get' his advice.

1. Live your life however you want. There's are right way and a wrong way. I you choose the wrong way, DON't get caught. If you do, don't call me. (I did get caught, I called him, and nothing...it was MY problem.

2. The only person whose standards you have to live up to are the man in the mirror's. Living up to the expectations of others is a losing proposition.

For years, I would put everything and everyone in front of my family. I was selfish, rebellious, and wanted to live my life. After one incident where I'd gotten into trouble, my dad, who usually yelled and hit, took me aside and said the words I will never forget:

3. Son, your family is the only thing that you have in this world. No one else is going to come to your defense faster than your mother. Do you thing your friends will? They might, once or twice, but they'll tire of you. Your girlfriends won't help you because they lack the resources. You better get your priorities straight, because once you lose your mother's support, it's over. We'll still love you...you're our son. But we won't help you. Your sense of the world is skewed. Reskew it.
