What's a cheap way to find out if you're insane?

My sister suffers from bouts of depression. My brother has bipolar disorder. I've always suspected that I suffer some form of mental health issue. I refuse to believe it though, because it seems like a cop out for not being able to fix my own problems. I can't stand the thought of medication. We're already turning into a nation of medicated zombies...and I F*CKING HATE ZOMBIES!!! I'd like to know one way or the other, though. Any suggestions?

Well, frustration is doing something different ways multiple times and getting the same responses/outcomes...
Insanity is doing the same thing multiple times and expecting different responses/outcomes.

Do something a hundred times, and see how you feel.

:o)

Reality is if you are asking, you are not delusional, and insane is probably not in your cards. You may have some issues, but so do most people. Is there someone you can talk to outside of your family?

I honestly dont think mental health is such a straightforward thing as that. Even if you were willing to go for councelling, it might take a long time before a diagnosis, which then may be wrong.

You are wondering, though, so dont ignore the question. I honestly suggest you do some reading on the subject to see if you seem to 'fit the bill'. And from snips of news that I've heard here and there - many mental illnesses can be caused by poor diet - cured by diet suppliements. I know it can be dangerous to avoid treatment, but it cant hurt to up your essential fats and take a multi-vitamin/mineral every day, right?

And just a little tip - if you're around people with issues, you can sometimes just go down wtih them - they might be dragging you into the blues, or pulling you down with them. It can help to remove yourself from the association - either physically or emotionally.

I wish you luck.

Cheapest way - wikipedia. Or spend some time in public to see how people react to you.

In all seriousness, if you have the willpower, I would pickup Dr. Burns' book "Feeling Good." A few years ago I struggled with depression and this book helped. I'm not selling it to you, you can get it at the library or read most of it online. Really, it helped me. I hope it will help you, too.

You are probably not insane as such but may have some issues that need resolving. I noticed you are around my age so possibly it's just the age thing lol(feel crazy a lot but think thats due to lack of sleep :)). If you are really that worried go speak to your doctor they are pretty cheap and will be able to direct you accordingly. Good luck :)

If you suspect you are having mental health issues see a doctor there are many alternatives one being cognitive behavior therapy.I dont know what the health care system is like in your country. Its certainly not a cop out to recognise when you need help.

Hon, first off, I have to say that just because somone has mental issues, that does NOT qualuify them as being "insane"! Actually, I think that is even a TWERRIBLE thing to call somone! That said, if you do have mental issues, you would NEED to be on medication, in order to get whatever issue it was "under control"! Having Bipolar Disorder, being derpressed, or whatever the case is nOT something to be embarrassed by or to be taken lightly. See a professional if you REALLY think you fall into these categories.

You probrably need an outlet. Try to find others you can share similar troubles with first like here in a group. You can remain anonymous and test drive the insanity for free before you rack up a huge bill!Trust me, if you are not depressed before the bill comes, it'll make you down right suicidal. Chat me up if you'd like to talk .

If you can hold a conversation with a bowl of cereals... then yes! It is also the cheapest way like you asked, setting you back about £1.50 at most unless you like your branded cereal! No but seriously see your GP and tell him what you think.

I agree with NowSure.

Also, even if you do have depression or some other mental issue... it doesn't mean you HAVE to resort to medications. I'm a believer that a healthy lifestyle and working through your own issues can work to 're-set' your mind. Depending upon the extremity of your issue, of course.

I've gone through serious bouts of depression in the past, have had a mental breakdown, and do/have considered myself to be bipolar due to severe manic episodes. But I've learned to, on my own, through realization and an attempt to become the wiser, have worked through my issues on my own. It took time, but no chemicals ever went into my body.

There is no cheap quick fix for mental illness. If there was, I would have found it.

Mental illness isn't the same as insanity.

There are treatments that don't turn people into zombies. Medication isn't a cure-all either. To lead a successful life, you will need to do some work on yourself too.

If you're trying to avoid an unnecessary doctor visit then these two screenings may help (Now these aren't actual diagnosing tools, only a professional can do that):

for bipolar:
http://counsellingresource.com/quizzes/goldberg-bipolar/index.html

for depression:
http://www.depression-screening.org/screeningtest/screeningtest.htm

I listed them in this order because bipolar is unusual highs and lows and depression (unipolar) is just unusual extreme lows.

Many cities have low income clinic who can hook you up with medicine companies which can provide reduced or free meds to those who qualify.
