I just thought of something significant: When I was in elementary school, it was uncommon to see a fat kid. Maybe there was one or two per grade, but that was it. We went outside and played hard at recess and after school. I rode my bike every day.
Today, I rarely see kids outside playing and they seldom have recess. The majority of kids are overweight and sit down to video games each day instead of going outside.

The generation of today has no respect even for themselves let alone the older generations. Not everyone of course, but as an observation the mistakes of one generation has been compounded upon the other.

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” ― Socrates (400 BC)

"We live in a decaying age. Young people no longer respect their parents. They are rude and impatient. They frequently inhabit taverns and have no self control." --Inscription, 6000 year-old Egyptian tomb

When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint".---Hesiod, 8th century BC

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?" ---Plato, 4th Century BC

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint... As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." ----Attributed to Peter the Hermit, AD 12743

Excellent and all those societies suffered a great fall like we are in now. History repeats itself. New society will be built upon the ashes of the old.

The funny thing is that 3 of the answers (by 2011A, ICmore, and Flowers) all voiced sentiments that I've heard before...... 20 some years ago! Those are some of the same things that my parents and grandparents generations said about my generation when I was a teen; less respect, no work ethic, lazy,
don't care about things, no morals....etc.

I am lucky enough to have a few close relationships with young people your age, and I have actually found them to be very impressive people. That being said, I do have some very strong concerns about your
generations ability to have and maintain good, healthy relationships - something that I think is far more important than how much money their future career will provide them. Technology lets us communicate with a wide range of people at the push of a button. But I know many teens and young adults
who can't have a sincere, calm, interactive conversation with the other. Listening is a skill, and my generation wasn't all that great at it, and the younger one.....well....I've had more than one teen tell me
that you really can do homework while listening to an iPod, playing a game on the computer, and IM'ing
three different friends in between texts on the phone. (I don't exaggerate.....that's a real life example I've given you!)

I fear that your generation may come to believe that a healthy relationship can be fed by texting and tweeting. But I've taken care of too many human beings - both young and old - to believe that. Humans
are born for connection.....meaningful, eye to eye, hand to hand, spirit to spirit connection. And that
just doesn't come from a phone or a computer.

I think your generation will be the "hungriest" generation the human race has ever seen.

(What do you think life will be like for your grandchildren?)

the differance is no respect, the role models they idealize are just horrible and they are a lot more skanky now-a-days. not to mention they think being mean or violent is cool.

The music they listen to is absolute sh!t. I grew up in the 90s when every week there seemed to be a classic song on the radio. It was like that in the 90s as well and more so in the 70s and 60s. I'd be hard-pressed naming one artist from the last 10 years I'd consider classic.

(Penelope, your questions are good tonight)

My generation has a gentleness that doesn't exist today. A maturity achieved through hard lessons and a different world than that of today. A world where there was war, but not as - I have trouble with the words-bloodthirsty as today. Where now someone pushes a button and we all die. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. And we could take our time unlike today. We talked and laughed and grew together and helped one another. We knew our neighbours-they were our friends and we socialized with them. We had telephones. Our relatives watched us. There were no daycares. Our friends and neighbours were our daycare providors. We had cars and trucks and they were simpler than those of today. And our hopes and dreams were different. We wanted homes and families and white picket fences. We fought injustice differently. We did not have the technology to communicate with keystrokes to people from all over the world. People called us at home. Their issues did not follow us around-there were no cells, no messaging, nothing like that. We knew someday that things would be faster, but, not then....much further in the future. For our children....Our tastes were simpler. Things were more affordable than now. You worked hard and you could buy a house, a car, all of those things. Now buying a home is almost a "dream". Your children were safer. Bullies were few. They were handled quickly. Mercilessly. Gays were not out. And did not want to be. And they were not bullied. There was a freedom with drugs. People experimented. They enjoyed. Sex wasn't going to kill you. I fear for the youth of today. You were not roofied(that spelling is wrong). If you got pregnant and you were a teenager, well, you both got married. And kept your babies. I could go on and on, but I hope you have a small glimpse of the differences. I should write another story. I would not want to be a teenager today not for anything in the world.

we were the generation who created the generation gap. the ww2 generation hated us with a passion, and we rejected everything they believed in and everything they stood for. we abandoned so much of our parents' culture, and tried to invent a new one. unfortunately, i fear we threw out the good along with the bad.

I was a respectful and courteous, not to mention, productive employee. I didn't disrespect people even with cause. I knew more about the world and was less self-serving :: ducking fron the rotten eggs and tomatoes headed my way::.
