What's better? an Intel Core i7 920XM at 2.0GHz or an Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 at 2.53GHz? Why?

I mean the Extreme Quad are 4 cores at 2.53Ghz each... And the i7 it's the newest and though it says 2.0 Ghz i don't know if it has multiple cores and it says this too; "3.2GHz Turbo Mode" The Quad core has 12mb cache and the i7 has 8mb cache... i have an idea of what cache is but does it really affects performance?

You - sir - are speaking geek-ease, and are asking on the wrong forum I think. I queried my son - he just built his own computer and he says "i7 is better. But more expensive. iodine switches are awesome, but the extreme quad core is probably fine." At least he understood what you asked which is better than I did. So there's that - hope it helps.

All I know is that I have heard that i7 is a newer generation of processor. Is newer always better? I do not know because I haven't experienced i7's before.

A better source for an accurate reply would be a google search worded this way: compare i7 920xm 2.0 Ghz vs. core 2 extreme quad qz9300 2.5 Ghz. That should yield some hits for sites that will have benchmark comparisons of both these processors. The Ghz reading itself is NOT the gauge of speed. You can have a lower Ghz reading and still be a faster chip, depending on other aspects of the processor itself.

It's kinda like saying if you have two tires. One is much larger than the other, therefore it rotates fewer times per mile than the smaller one, which has to spin faster to keep up. The Ghz is like the rotational speed. The larger tire, which is technically "better" (fewer revolutions per mile, therefore longer tire life), spins slower (e.g. lower "Ghz"). But it's better than the smaller one, spinning at a faster "Ghz." Make sense? That's why Ghz is not the way to judge chips...unless you are comparing two of the exact same chips, in which case the higher Ghz is better.
