Resolved Question

What's the deal with US movie ratings?

In the UK you have to be at least 12 to watch a movie rated 12, 15 to watch a movie rated 15, and 18 to watch a movie rated 18, and you can only get R18 movies from "specialist suppliers".

Watch the documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated" to get the real story.

We have (that I know of) G- General Audience
PG - Parental Guidance
PG-13 Ummm...I think you have to be accompanied by an adult if you're under 13
R- RESTRICTED No one under 17
NC17...I guess you can get in if you are 17 and over
Ummmm.... I think that's it :-)

Even the pg 13 movies are not appropriate for 13 year olds to watch. All the movies here in the U.S. are full of sex and blood. Even the pg 13 movies have the occasional exposure of a buttcheek or breast. I just stopped watching them! The U.S. is run by men, you can expect it to get more inappropriate (not joking).

Over here it is a balancing act between the religious organizations and the studios trying to make a buck. I see more kids in rated R movies that in the PG-13. If the parents of children can "believe" in passing the responsibility of what their children are watching onto a useless rating system then they can apparently sleep at night and Pixelita, there still is the X rating above NC-17.

the rating system sucks over here. The US may have freedom of speech but they are also completely and totally depraved as my mother and grandmother would put it. You can't stoop any lower.

G - General audiences (appropriate for all viewers)
PG - Parental guidance suggested (not enforced - usually is simply difficult to understand, or contains mild language/violence)
PG-13 - Parental guidance strongly cautioned under 13 (also not enforced in most theaters; contains one of more of the following: mild to moderate violence, language, sensuality, etcetera. No fully visible nudity, however)
R - Restricted under 17 without parents or guardian (contains one or more of the following: moderate to strong language, strong violence, moderate sensuality, drug use, etcetera)
NC17 - No child under 17 allowed (contains graphic violence and/or strong sensuality)
X - 18+ (graphic sensuality)
