Flattery is selfish, shallow and insincere.
Appreciation is unselfish, encompassing and sincere.Like (1)

If its sincerely meant - they want to pay you a compliment out of genuine thanks. If its flattery, it may be true but there is an ulterior motive. The ulterior motive could be to get you to do extra work, help out in a crisis or even to get into your panties.

A compliment is paid sincerely but behind flattery always lurks an ulterior motive.
