What's the difference between religion and spirituality?

I've already asked a few people this question, and they've given me insightful answers. (You guys don't have to answer if you don't want to.) But I still feel a little fuzzy about the two.

What's the difference to you? How do you define them?

I believe religions are a way of controlling the masses with fear etc. You do the right thing (what we say) and you go to heaven if you don't you will go to hell.

Now with spirituality I believe you have a belief in some higher power but it is more personal and not so many rules and regulations

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, it is just my thoughts

being religious means you are following a religion, but if you are spiritual then you are really living through the influence of the holy spirit.
I am neither! :)

The development of the spirit is considered as spirituality, that is why the secular humanists or atheists also claim themselves as spiritual. This spirituality is confined to the earthly life.
Religion might be a belief in some man-made doctrine; but true religion is the Revelation of the One True God. The first group is just performing some rituals without spirituality. So, the real spirituality is only to maintain close and eternal communion with God and wholeheartedly doing His Will.

Religion "is defined in The Bible as:
Providing for Widows and Orphans, and to keep onesself
Unspotted by the World.
Spirituality, on the other hand, Is A "Personal Relationship"
with The Creator.

U gain spirituality by following religion..Spirituality is the feeling, religion is a book....Following any religion makes a person spiritual..Even we can say atheists are spiritual in their own way!

Religion is something that a whole lot of people believe in reference to God. They also have a set of rules one must abide by if they are in that religious group.

Then spirituality is the actual bond to someone greater than we. Spirituality is how one relates to God.

Religion is about the control of people by other people, spirituality is about the freedom of belief.

spirituality is simply any belief system where outside forces influence people and/or their environment. religion is organized systems of spirituality that people follow. for example: one who believes we have a purpose on this earth without adhering to the guild lines of a particular religious sect would be considered spiritual but not religious.

Being religious means it is expected of you to follow those set of rules of which that faith hold true to itself within it's community. Spirituality me and letting go of certain aspects in life that others take for granted and walk the path to enlightenment. Spiritualist beleive there is a God and then peace is the answer to all of life's problem. Finding God in peace is the ultimate goal.

Religion is something like Catholic or Baptist. Spirituaility is just a feeling or emotion.

As far as I understand it, you can be spiritual without believing in a specific deity...

For me the difference between ones religion and their spirituality is very simple and really a matter of one’s personal life. Religion is the outward practice of a belief system involving other like minded individuals while Spirituality is the inward attitude one assumes towards ones beliefs. Simply religion is taught leaving ones Spirituality to be the inward relationship with the source of all life.

religion defined means ... to re-bind or to bind back again.
but definitions are unique to each of us because we all hold our own to be true.

Fo me the difference is an outward vs. inward seeking of self.

religion being outward
spirituality being inward
