    hello, TinWoodman,

it depends on the type of therapy

if it is cognitive behavioural therapy... then it is diagnosis based

if it is person-centred, then it is about helping you to talk about your difficulties

........... then help you to understand your difficulties

.................. then help you to connect with yourself in a better way.

and in person-centred you don't need to be in your "not well" phase for it to work.

i have tried several types... and found person-centred to be the one with the long lasting benefits

i hope this is of some help.

    respect, from robbie

they get a family history and literally get to know you. THey will ask you a bunch of questions to better figure out who you are and maybe why you are the way you are. I know this from many many different therapy visits with different therapists. The questions range from "Who is in your immediate family and your relationship with them?" to "Do you do drugs?"

probably assess you, to see if you need help at all, and if so, what kind of help would suit you best.

It's a misconception that a therapist can 'fix' you. What a therapist does, is listen to you, help you identify the problem, and then discuss ways you can try to 'fix' yourself. Or at least manage yourself.

There's no 'plan'. No 'therapy' that is like an instruction booklet for how to get you better. It's all up to you. Basically they are just there to give you a sounding board to bang problems and ideas off of. They can't 'fix' anything, they barely even give advice.

asks you very general questions about yourself and allow you to decide what you choose to talk about most by monitoring your answers and taking certain physical and vocal cues.
