"In a Relationship" implies that you're in a relationship that has a chance of ending at some point. Marriage is *supposed* to be forever, so if you say you're "Married", then you're implying there's no chance you will ever be with anyone else.<br />

Of course, in today's society, none of that's really how it works, but I think that was ideally what it was for.

The status "In a relationship" can be easily changed without the splitting of property and the hiring of lawyers etc. Being "married" denotes a more commited form of relationship which involves the law. Two very different status. It is kinda like lying if you write "In a relationship" instead of "Married" if you are married.
