eucalyptus oil, (i think it might just be an ozzie thing) on a hankerchief pinned to your clothing at night. It doesnt work. Spoonful of honey, and honey and lemon and hot water.
Also cammomile leaves in a bowl get a towel and pour hot water into the bowl and place a towel over your head and breath in the steam from the camomile as much as you can till the water isnt hot anymore. This always works to clear congestion.

It's not really an old wive's tale... it's just something my mum does. If you are feeling brave get a WHOLE lime, a whole lot of mint and some honey and blend it up with a bit of water. I was never brave enough to try but apparently it works beautifully
