I think it is simply sabving money and doing first chats by phone. I suspect they know in two mins if they want to talk to you any further, so doing it by phone saves everyone time and money, arranging interview slots, booking rooms, travel etc <br />

OK it doesnt make you feel good when after one minute they say OK thanks you will hear in due course (not that that hapopens to me obviously) but at least it saves you time as well. Maybe I shouldn't take the next call when I am in the bath playing with my rubber ducky
