The NYT used to be a much more fair paper. Unfortunately, like most of the dying newspapers it has done into the death spiral of focusing editorial to match the mindset of the mostly urban, mostly liberal audience that still reads the newspaper.

To be fair, I think the NYT is a better newspaper overall than most - and certainly beats the tar out of so-called 'newspapers' like the LA Times and Boston Globe, but yes it does have an editorial bias to the left.

That's an interesting point about tailoring content to reader-disposition. It seems to be across the board - I notice Google is forever enticing me down the same cul-de-sac to have my expectations caressed and flattered rather than challenged. I don't buy London's The Guardian much any more but they had a great habit of planting the most irreconcilable opposites on facing 'Comment' pages - most notably veteran Socialist Tony Benn rubbing shoulders with maverick ultra-Conservative Enoch Powell...maybe not too-surprisingly they were actually good friends off the page:).

EnglishSteve- Point on this. One thing that most people don't understand about media is that its built for advertisers - even newspapers- and advertisers don't care about what the world or even the whole country things- they think in terms of major markets. Advertisers in newspapers don't give a damn about what people in small towns and rural areas think because frankly, the big retailers and car dealerships that fuel their advertising don't have locations in rural areas and small towns.

I check out a range of stories every week on NYT and I think you're lucky to have a it as a good alternative to Murdoch's media.

Yes, because otherwise liberals would have no voice right? (Other than NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, Time-Life, Reuters, AP, Huffington Post, Google News, etc. etc. etc.)

Hi - it looks like you all - liberals and conservatives - have plenty of choice and if that's right you have a healthy media:). I'm not a great tv-watcher so I'm not up to speed on the outlets you mention except for Google News, which is an aggregator without a discernible agenda, and of course Reuters which seems to me to be neither politically liberal nor conservative - although I do think it's properly cautious. I did glance at 'The Huff' but life is short...NYT appeals to me because it has a good range of well-written stuff from arts to international affairs and an appealing air of rationality. Murdoch's works, I'm afraid, are seen very differently over here not least - but not solely - because of the current phone-hacking scandal currently subject to several police, broadcasting regulator and parliamentary inquiries. You'll appreciate that, with their outfit publishing some 40% of our Fleet Street papers, we're none too impressed with them.

It's American and it's claiming to be news: that alone makes me suspect that it's probably politcally scewed and inclined more towards melodrama than factual news reporting.

These days the internet is a more reliable source then the mass media and government. Makes the old Soviet propaganda machine look wimpy.
