What's your opinion of people who make a point of stating that they don't have or don't watch TV?

Q&A Home   >  Community   >  EP

I suspect a little intellectual snobbery is going on. Then I wonder who decided TV was defacto 'low brow' - I have degrees from two universities and I value TV, I think it has it's place.

I think the stigma attached to people who watch hours and hours of TV is what prompts this all encompassing put down. It's an easy thing to announce to people and unless they live in the same house, impossible to prove. I generally don't watch TV, but I don't think it's because I'm so much better than anyone else. I would just rather play on the computer or read a hot trashy romance novel.

Pretentious because usually they are telling you to let you know TV is beneath them

I never believe people that tell me they do not have time to watch tv. What do they do in their spare time at home when they are not working, studying, eating, or exorcising? I doubt that they are reading books all the time. People need brain breaks and that is what tv offers us, a time to relax and escape from our daily lives. Even my most busy days, I have time to watch at least an hour of the tube.

Not around here on a Saturday night. I can't stand any of the reality shows. It's TV like this that keeps radio in business.

What if they can't afford a TV? That's hardly intellectual snobbery.

Even people who can't afford a TV, have a TV. Where do you live?

I had friends in Austin who didn't have TV's. Not having cable stinks. But regardless, it's a personal choice. Why is it only to be as intellectual snobbery?

They are probably too busy living life to watch others living a scripted artificial life. Or on the internet interacting with people.

Ha! My new boss has claimed that she doesn't watch television, and I suspect that she is full of ****. Really, if she has so much spare time to pursue other more wholesome pastimes, why isn't she unusually smart, rather than simply of average intelligence?

In her case, she was definitely trying to establish superiority. Like only commonplace folk watch television, and the truth is, she is just a provincial woman with an annoying voice.
