Hi AriesRSA
Humans learned the clapping behavior from sea lions and were also taught to feed them fish. We actually owe them a lot but have repaid them in fish by now. I saw a documentary about it on Discovery Channel and then I balanced a ball on my nose. Not sure where I picked that habit up from.
The custom of clapping may be as old and as widespread as humanity itself. We know the Ancient Romans did it.
