When I was growing up, I was told boys NEVER cry, it was a sign of weakness.?

Is this why I cannot cry to this day in front of anyone??.....When I was spanked....I was hit Harder... if I cried.
Animal movies are hard for me to watch to this day...But I won't let anybody see me get teary eyed.

sorry u were taught that BS growing up. when my now- 16 y old son, who was nasty mouthy and just plain mean as a three and four yr old---cried in reaction to frustration, for the first time--i knew he'd be OK. instead of lashing out (when he was 5 he had this break-thru, i'd been teaching him to think instead of blindly acting on impulse/triggers)--he'd chosen to be civilized and cry in sadness rather than swear or hit someone.

it is really embarrassing to see a man cry. when my parents got divorced my dad was bawling like a baby and i wanted to crawl into a hole and die. some guy that i used to date started crying once because he got all uncomfortable and i was horrified by this as well. your parents were right. men shouldn't cry. it's not attractive at all.

i think more men should be open about there feelings. i find emotional men to be more of a comfort than a man that thinks he needs to be "macho"
it's okay to cry!!!!!!!!

I never cry in front of anybody too, unless it gets really bad and the others are very close friends.
I only did it twice, once after surgery sedation stopped working and once when I had half my mouth cut open without sedation. The pain was enough to make me cry.

It's a real mystery why this is, I guess I don't allow myself to show any real emotion to the public. Only what I want them to see, strange actually.
Thanks for posting! Get's me thinking.

Yes, that's probably why you can't cry. My brother doesn't cry either--at funerals, nothing.

A good cry is good for you!

It lubricates dry eyes!

there is nothing wrong with a man- or anyone- crying. It's not a sign of weakness, it just shows that you have feelings and need to express them.

Your upbringing is probably why you can't cry. You have been socialized to feel like it's wrong, even though you know it isn't (you do know that, right?).

you sould never feel embarrased or ashamed to cry. Is a natural emotion. God made you that way, and he cried infront of his people. If the lord is big enough to cry infront of people, why arent you?

My mother taught me the same thing, and I am female. She also said it was a weakness, and I cannot count the number of times I heard "I'll give you something to cry about" if she ever found me crying.

She even put her hand over my mouth to muffle the crying at my father's funeral. Before the funeral, she had reminded us that we were not to cry in front of anyone.
