Why is it that some people want to hear the truth but then can't handle it. Where do you draw the line when it comes to honesty?

i learned its not the truth people are afraid of. its how they react to the truth. so when i tell someone i think may be hard for them to take i preface it with one of these lines..

"do you want me to tell you the truth or what you want to hear?"

"i hope you can just hear me out because i don't want to lie to you. it's not pretty."

"can i tell you something?"

"can i trust you to handle what i have to say to you?"

something about those words people are receptive to whatever it is you have to say. even if its bad or ugly. i suck at being tactful or diplomatic so i say that so i can say what i really need to say. i suck at sugar coating. i suck even more at lying. i get the whole deer in the headlights doe eyed look. i look around searching for something to say that sounds good. finally i just give up & spill it. i can't lie at all. people appreciate that about me.
