It is my understanding that it was written about things that would happen within that generation, and future events that have not taken place.

Ok I see what you mean now. To get a clue on God's perspective of time, think of a ***** of movie film lying on a table. You can see one frame after another, all at the same time. You can jump ahead to look at future frames, and jump back to older frames. So there is the simultaneous perception of events in the past and future. There are difficulties in describing this - note that I am using time-based descriptors to describe a perception not based in time. The real point here is that the perception of events does not need to be in the same sequence they occur in.

Now, if you understand all that, add this in. There are many strips of film, all going off in different directions. These are the possibilities of things that could happen, depending on what choices are made. The strips intertwine and loop around, as some decisions affect others.

Now consider this: something in the past can be changed, and the effects immediately flow on into the future. Think of it like a spreadsheet, where you calculate the value of an investment five years into the future, taking into account the rate of return and fees, taxes etc. You can then change the initial interest rate, and the effects immediately flow on through the five year projection. This is God's perception of time and cause and effect.

The Book of Revelation is actually a guide book, which helps you understand what to expect when you go through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, such as Jesus went through when John the Baptist baptised him - the dove descending, the voice from heaven, etc. The abomination that causes desolation etc are references to the struggles that go on within yourself during the process. The 1000 years of peace describes how you feel when it is done.

The prophetic vision is a kind of interior intuition, an intellectual and spiritual enlightenment. The most authoritative book on the subject of the Revelation, or Apocalypse, is "The Book of Destiny" by Rev. H. Kramer, still in print. Rev Kramer explains what the symbols mean and how they have been fulfilled in certain historical events, as well as those events that are still to come.

John was told to write down the things "that are" and the things "that must take place after these." The things that "are" refer to issues that needed to be addressed in his day. Certain congregations needed admonition to deal with problems they had allowed to develop and John dealt with this in chapters 2 & 3 where he wrote to seven congregations in all.
The bulk of Revelation takes place in the "Lord's day." This refers to the time period beginning with Jesus' coronation as heavenly king of God's kingdom and ends when he hands the kingdom back to God. This is the kingdom Jesus taught us to pray for that will accomplish God's will and eradicate evil and suffering and those responsible for it. The Lords day is also called the "last days" by the apostle Paul and is the same period Jesus himself referred to when he gave the signs of his presence. Other Bible prophecies help us to see that the Lord's day began in 1914 and that as king of God's kingdom Jesus will soon act to fully restore God's sovreignty. Both the signs Jesus gave and the warnings Paul left have been fulfilled since 1914 and this is why we have witnessed increased turmoil on earth. But Revelation is basically good news as it reveals to us God's purposes for man and the earth are soon to be realised through Jesus as God's reigning king.

No it's a book about the night sky between 59 and 79AD: John, like everyone else at the time, thought that the night sky was heaven and that the planets were messangers from God. What John did was basically make up stories about astronomical events and these stories became Christianity.

Check out Xoroaster's channel on youtube he's written a book about this. http://www.youtube.com/user/Xoroaster/videos?sort=dd&view=0&page=1

Follow the link, watch the videos and you'll see what I mean. Revelation is a book of Jewish history and astrology.

I guess those of us who ever got into that subject will know after every single person that was alive in 1948 is dead. When that happens it will shoot down the explanation for Matt24:34, and we'll have to figure something else out.

I believe it was about Rome of his time (the "Great Beast") and, specifically, about Nero because 666 is a cipher for the name of Nero.

I believe that the book of Rev is an account of things that were going on in the day. I also believe that the 'guts' of the story was written from things Jesus knew and wrote about as child, and the begining and end of it from something he wrote while on Patmos himself.
I also believe that the number of the devil chaged because of when John wrote the two parts of it. 30 ad he wrote the guts of it, which was 616 years after the arc was stolen in 586 bc, and then the begining and end written in 79 ad, 665 after the arc was stolen, and then in 80ad when he finially published it, the number was 666.

He was talking figuratively. I think he thought it was going to happen soon. Most Christians interpret it to be some undisclosed time in the future. I personally think takening the Bible too literally makes it loose all meaning. The stories have to be looked at from the point of a lessons or parables more than a history.

There was a lot of symbolism used so I think it would be classified as a vision rather than him actually being present at the future during the events.

Whether it was a vision or he was standing where it stood, were the events he saw actually happening. For instance it may have been in the year 2055. So has 2055 been and gone and within the context of the apocalypse. Has Jesus already returned and we are living in another dimension? I know it's a pretty trippy question as I am trying to grasp the nature of time and space from Gods perspective compared to ours.

Oh I see. Time changes between our perspective and a heavenly being would be different. Heck time differences between past and present are different due to the slowing earth's rotation. That's a tough one. I think my favorite example of this is in Genesis when God is creating the heavens and earth and refers to days when he is not a planetary being and outside of the boundaries of a sunset and sunrise as we know it. :) What thing is setting in his existence that makes Him call it day?!
