No. It only shows that they care that they let people know that they don't care...

They probably don't actually care (or very little), but have a large ego and think others will want to know of their uncaringness towards said issue.

Of course "they care" but will not openly admit it and if they did not why are they responding?

I think it means that they dont care and are not interested. Dont know why they answer in the first place

You're talking about in this forum? If they answer "I don't care," it usually means they say it to make a statement. Like when someone purposely leaves a comment that says "no comment." It's not that they have no comment, it's that they want to show you they have one but are too "polite" to share it. (Ha!)

It could also mean the difference between several options is almost nothing and therefore irrelevant.

No, it doesn't. It only shows they considered it impolite not to answer.

Klingons always take that for granted, don't they? Just kidding. Maybe they just show you how they deal with the situation you asked about, so at least they care to answer you to show you another opportunity.

If it's a question here, then it's pointless for them to answer with I don't care and you're possibly right, they might care. If it's a question asked in person, then the response may be honest, or maybe they don't care enough to respond honestly, or it's possible that they care a great deal but they know their honest response will spark an argument that they don't care to have.

I think it depends on the question, and who's answering the question. 'cause I know w/ any of my sibs & BFFs, if they answer with "I don't care" I know they truly don't.

then there's the awkward mister in my life. when he answers with "I don't care," I know he's just uncomfortable to let me know his real answer.

then there's the "I don't care" which equals "you're bothering me" & that's usually obviously to tell
