what gives the right to keep secrets is that the other is obviously doing it . the right to keep yours is that the other hasn't found out. It's not until you lie to keep the secret when you lose your right to keep it. Once asked, it's time to tell the truth and if the whole truth is unduly hurtful, maybe filter it a bit but only to keep from hurting the feelings of the other, not to preserve your own integrity. Otherwise tell the whole truth when subject is breached.
