Resolved Question

Where and how would one seek help? What do these symptoms sound like?

The person I speak of has lost a great amount of weight in the past few months with symptoms of: Nausea and puking, over all feeling of weakness, frequent urination, dizziness and confusion, loss of appetite, tingling in hands and feet, change in breathing and heart rate, thirst, sharp stomach pains on lower left side, almost blacking out... Has been to the ER three times now (they found nothing), has Family history of tubal pregnancies, cancer and diabetes.

With no insurance and her health fading fast, she came up with money to see a Family Doctor but can't be seen until a week from now. Where else could she go? Who would help? If the ER has found nothing???

That sounds like a lot of the hallmarks of diabetes - and the family history makes it even more likely. The ER should have done a blood or urine test for diabetes, but (even i they did) the tests can sometimes give false results depending on when (and what) she recently ate. Encourage her to try the ER again.

What you describe sounds like it could be many things....From diabetes, to thyroid problems....(thyroid gland affects heart rate)...the pain in the lower left side, could indicate something with an ovary or spleen....

The only way to really tell is with lab tests, and possibly a scan, if the lab comes up clean...

To check for diabetes, your friend should take a glucose tolerance test....it's much more accurate than just checking your blood sugar....

Your friend sounds like it is getting to the point where it could be an emergency....I would say to take her to a different emergency room....anyone who has been throwing up for any length of time, accompanied with the other symptoms you mentioned, should be seen asap....Health depts aren't generally set up to handle emergencies.....

If she has no doctor and no money, take her to her local health department for a start. They may be able to tell her where to go next.

She could have endometriosis or fibroids pressing on nerves
which are causing the numbness. All of her symptoms sound like a hormonal imbalance. If ER did ultrasound and it didn't detect ectopic pregnancy, I still wouldn't rule it out nor endometriosis or fibroids. Ultrasound doesn't show the whole picture. She may need a laparoscopy, MRI or C-scan. Forget the family doctor/ general practitioner. Get her to an OB/GYN at a women's clinic right away. Good Luck.

Did the ER do any blood tests or urinalysis? That's probably the best place to start, find a clinic that can do some simple blood work. With a history of diabetes in the family combined with the symptoms she is having it could well be diabetes, I'd suggest she get tested for it before it progresses any further. Perhaps the public health department could do the testing or refer her to someone who can.
Good luck, I hope things work out for your friend.

I had most of the same symptoms your friend does, and went to the ER and they and my Dr decided I was getting extremely dehydrated and passing out. I've carried water and Gatorade with me since and not had any problems.

Get an ultrasound scan - it's possible she may have gallstones, if the pain is near her liver and she keeps throwing up. Ask her if she retches and brings up bile a lot & continues retching when there's nothing in her stomach. All these are signs of gallstones - get a scan.

I know this won't be your BEST answer, but when my daughters have been too ill to wait for a doctor's appt. at our very busy Family Physician Office - we go to Patient First - everytime they have been extremely thorough - erring on the side of caution. They have a lab AT their facilities and extremely competent doctors and nurses. Get her somewhere - my brother was very very ill before he was diagnosed with as a Brittle Diabetic - very high sugar levels - like 400's - crazy - could die kind of high! Good luck - keep us updated!

Find a free clinic. Most states have something, check with health department. Does sound a lot like diabetes to me too.
