Where did the superstition "touch wood" originate.?

Back in the past, people used to believe that the gods live in the tree trunks, so by touching them they get blessed.

I think it may be of pagan origin when they believed touching the bark of the tree would bring luck as thats where spirits lived. Sounds ridiculous and probably untrue!

I heard the same as strawberry. Bad spirits were suppose to live in the wood, and you knocked on it to scare them or keep them from hearing what you had just said.

I heard that it was from the Catholics....For when they thought that they had a piece of the cross....and they touched it for a blessing.....But the pagan thing sounds just as possible
