The discovery of controlled fire allowed two purposes: keeping warm and cooking food. Hypothetically speaking, if we hadn't discovered fire, we would have found other things to eat that do not require cooking raw meat, as well as different methods of keeping warm, such as by using animal fur. However, I think it is impossible for Homo Erectus to not have discovered fire; it was inevitable as lightning causes natural fires and hitting stone against stone causes sparks to ignite.
