The Smithereens were awesome. I'm always surprised more people hadn't heard of them.

Mission of Burma. They could have been huge, but hearing issues doomed the band from the start. Also college radio wasn't really around until the mid 80s. They sold in Boston MA alone 10K copies of a 6 song EP. Check out "Academy Fight Song" and "That's When I reach for my Revolver". Classic jangly hard rock.

Dream Theater is so good they really should be as big as a rock band can get. They have a good following but I mean they should be huge.

Charlie Sexton. I always thought he'd be bigger than he was. Bands? The Amboy Dukes.

one of the most popular homegrown bands is called the Tragically Hip. we all expected they'd go big internationally, but it never seemed to happen

Death, the pioneering death metal band fronted by Chuck Schuldiner (who died in 2001 from brain cancer, RIP, guess he could've used some Genetic Reconstruction, bonus points if you get the reference).

the tedeschi trucks band, they did just win a grammy but a lot of people have never heard of them, also it would be cool if more people liked jazz

Men without hats. The music was light, fun, and well written with vocals that were unusual, but effective.
Perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's
