Which is more noble?

Allowing a pair of pandas to live off of the land knowing they will never procreate and their species will go extinct or "rescuing" the pandas and forcing copulation for a steady wave of camera toting tourists?

Sort of answered this one a couple of weeks ago. No real answer to it though. I think that if it was proven that human population spread or general envionmental degradation had forced them into their situation and that it could be proven that their lifestyle wasn't inherently fragile, then there would be a case for continuing funding. If not, and as you implied, they just become a teddy bear freak show, then I guess it could be more usefully spent elsewhere.

We should make sure our bamboo purchases do not involve panda-habitat bamboo. Preserving the natural habitat of an endangered species like the panda is very noble. It's not accidental that all humans everywhere love the panda bear; it would be a crime against nature and humanity to let them go extinct. Rated: +2Vote for this!
