It is what you believe it is...can be different for all....perception is the only truth...and we all have that....

In the end it doesn't matter why or what we believe...like gravity it happens whether you believe it happens or not...

All I know is this... if I believe there is something or an energy outside of myself then I will always have hope, if I have hope I dont have to care what lables are put on that energy....
God, Bhudda, Mohammed, Jesus, Spirit, Angel, Cosmic Muffin, Holy Grail, Val Hallah, Soul, Energy, Force, Whatever, ...without hope there is nothing....

Soul is divine. We are souls. Soul is an individualized point, of a universal consciousness. Soul is the universal atom of God. see: ECKANKAR

First we need the “Bible’s” Definition of “The Soul”.

Soul and Spirit

The Bible shows that the soul is not something inside a person; the soul is the very person himself. For example, when God created Adam, “the man came to be a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) Adam was not given a soul; he was a soul, a complete person.

Consequently, we read that souls are born. (Genesis 46:18) They can eat or fast. (Leviticus 7:20; Psalm 35:13) They weep and faint away. (Jeremiah 13:17; Jonah 2:7) Souls can be kidnapped, pursued, and put in irons. (Deuteronomy 24:7; Psalm 7:5; 105:18) Some Bibles render the original-language word as “soul” in those verses, while others use the words “being,” “creature,” or “person.” All mean the same thing.

Since the soul is the person, when a person dies, the soul dies. Ezekiel 18:4 says: “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.” Also, Acts 3:23 says: “Any soul [or, person] that does not listen to that Prophet will be completely destroyed from among the people.” So the soul is not something that survives the death of the body.

The spirit is not the same as the soul. In humans, the spirit is the life-force that enables them to perform the activities of life. The spirit is like electricity. Electricity can run a fan or a refrigerator but cannot by itself move the air or make things cold. In the same way, our spirit enables us to see, hear, and think. But the spirit itself can do none of those things without the eyes, ears, or brain. That is why the Bible says of man: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.”—Psalm 146:4.

According to the Bible, therefore, neither the soul nor the spirit leaves the body at death to continue life in the spirit realm.

I believe the soul is immortal - it is me - just as I was me at the age of 1, and I was me at the age of 8, and I was me at the age of 15 and I was me at the age of 22 and I will always be me even though there is not one cell the same in my body in these periods. The matter that made up my body has changed, and yet I continued.

CS Lewis says that you have a body but that you are your soul.

The soul is not Divine though as that means it is God - my soul is not God but it is immortal.

Aristotle wrote exactly on this question in his book 'De Anima' which translates as 'on the soul'. It was Aristotles work that was then built upon by St Thomas Aquinas and thus it is also well worth reading his 'Summa Theologica' on this question.

[dayenknight - You contradicted yourself from paragraph 1 to paragraph 2 dayenknight. How can you say reality is based on perception/belief, and then in the very next breath say that things happen irrespective of your belief?]

[pro390 - I don't agree with your interpretation of Scripture, nor have 2000 years worth of Christians - there is a chance however that you're right and the rest of Christianity is wrong...]

Sure I beleive in a soul, not its divinty though.

As to what i think a soul is? I think the soul is simply the word we use to describe the part of us that isn't physical, our thoughts if you will.

Read your answer from pro390 This is the only answer you need. It is truly based upon the foundation of true knowledge. All other answer are coming from confusion. Confusion means Babylon. The Bible say's seek ye many counsels, but don't walk in the counsel of the ungodly.

The soul is a marvelous idea sprung from the great chance.
It is born from electric signals in the most beautiful machine we know, and it have the power to entrap and set free any human being.
It is our sense of self and our sense of isolation and belonging. It is our moral and weakness, our hatered and sadness.
It is something much more than a divine entity, it is a complex image formed throughout our entire life, and but a shard of it remains as the values, ideas and memories we leave behind as we die, and this beautiful thing shatter and is forever lost.
