I think in order to seek actual help I would go to a psychiatrist (an MD) who specializes in depression. Oftentimes, primary care physicians can prescribe meds for depression but they don't know as much as a psychiatrist does. A good psychiatrist will know a lot about the illness. Also, research shows that the combination of medication plus therapy works best. Finding someone you trust (a therapist) will go a long way towards learning to manage the depression. If you are looking for support, consider contacting NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). There should be a chapter in your area. You will find many understanding folks there. Also, you may find that some of your friends have dealt with depression as well. They can often give help and advice. To those who don't understand, give them a chance to be supportive and helpful, even if they haven't been there. I have dealt with depression most of my life. It is a highly treatable illness, and getting the right help is very important. You deserve it. And don't forget to take good care of yourself. Things like diet, exercise, and sleep are very important in managing depression.

From a licensed psychologist, social worker, or psychiatrist along with your primary care medical physician. And they will definitely understand.
