Who is a sincere apology for - the one you've wronged or yourself?

& I mean the kind of apology when you really suffer for having caused someone else pain... is it more to make them feel better or because you need their forgiveness to move on?

Both. The other person probably needs that apology to move on as well. When a person feels betrayed, that betrayal gives way to anger and resentment. An apology can mean the world to a person.

But I would need it for me too. I would want the person to know I regret it and wouldn't do it again. That way I could also have closure.

well the time I'm thinking of it was for the person I wronged.. I felt horrible for hurting her and I wanted to make it right!! I couldn't find enough words to say I'm sorry and that what I said was out of line. I even sent flowers as a peace offering.
I think the apology can be for you, the person you hurt, or both.
I guess with the forgiveness, you get a sense of relief and gladness so I guess it's for you as well.

'Just to move on' is a concept that can be taken in many different ways. The easiest way to move on is to just have a clear conscience. Just because they haven't accepted your apology doesn't mean you can't move on. If you have a good clean, clear conscience you should be fine and I'm sure they will as well.
