I believe that we have had many of the right people in that office at the provebial right time even though many of them are at the time not looked on favorably. Don't get me wrong we have had some real pooch-screwers in there too but the demands of the office can be overwhelming

The best in my opinion was Truman as he may of had a temper but he also knew restraint in the face of demand

The worst would be Hoover as his leadership did nothing to deter the Great Depression

Oh and for those who may not study history Lincoln, one of our most beloved presidents while in office violated the Constitution and the Bill of Rights more than any other president yet we all love Lincoln.

Hate them all.

Except for Theodore Roosevelt.

Abe Lincoln (for the Emancipation Proclamation) , FDR (for coping with the Great Depression and World War II), and George Washington (because he was known for his honesty) are all popular.

Personally, out of the presidents who were around during my lifetime, I like Bill Clinton the most -- not because of his politics (because I don't trust any politician) - but because he was hot.

The one who started the WPA ( Right?), where they just hired people during the Great Depression to make sewers and **** like that.

I think they've all got their good points and their bad points. Often what makes a "good President" means that they could be very bad husbands and very nasty men in person.

But if I had to pick:

FDR - because he was tough enough to make some very hard decisions and yet he had enough social conscience to do the right thing. Right man, right time.

Jefferson - because he was smart as a whip and incredibly curious, and because he was one of the earliest proponents of a limited Federal Government. It's partly thanks to him that the President is (supposedly) kept in check, and can't act as a dictator.

Clinton - because he understood that economics is more about perception than reality, and hence led one of the greatest economic resurgences the world has ever seen.
